Why are you looking at my family like it hurts your brain?

The first people I’ve ever truly known who looked like me are my children. Think about that.

People often get a huge sense of belonging from the fact that you look like your family. How often do people look at a newborn baby just to see which features they’ve inherited from mom and dad? Now imagine never being able to have that.

Imagine that every you walk in a room with your family—the people who’ve raised you and known you you’re whole life—you can see people trying to use Pythagorean’s theorem to figure out how two white people made a Korean and biracial kid.

I’m grateful to have two beautiful children who look like the belong with me. However, I am grateful to have my parents—weird stares and all.

Word of advice: the next time your faced with a family that may not look traditional or may not all “match”. Fix your face and do your algebraic equations privately. Whether you could tell or not, I belong with them too.
